How electricians get more calls from Google Maps
The top three results on the map get most of the calls. This is the checklist for getting into them.
Why the map matters more than anything else
When someone searches "electrician near me" or "electrician" plus a town, Google shows a map with three businesses before any websites. Most people choose from those three. They compare the star ratings, glance at the photos and ring one.
Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance (does this business do what was searched for), distance (how close is it) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed is it). You cannot change where you are based. Everything below works on the other two.
1. Claim and verify the profile
Search for your business name on Google. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one. Google will ask you to verify that you own the business. Nothing else counts until that is done.
2. Choose the right categories
Your primary category carries the most weight, so it should be "Electrician". Then add secondary categories that match the work you actually do. Do not add categories for services you do not offer.
3. List every service
Add each service separately with a short description: rewires, fuse board upgrades, EV charger installation, emergency call-outs, lighting, testing and certification. This is how Google matches you to specific searches.
4. Set your service areas
List the towns and areas you genuinely cover. Be realistic. Claiming the whole country does not help, and Google still weighs distance from your base.
5. Write a proper description and keep details exact
Say what you do, where, and what makes you a safe choice, including that you are a Safe Electric registered contractor. Make sure your business name, address and phone number are identical on your profile, your website and any directories you are listed on.
6. Ask for a review on the day of every job
This is the biggest lever of all. Reviews affect both where you rank and whether people ring you once they find you.
- Get your review link from your profile and save it on your phone.
- Send it by text or WhatsApp before you leave the job, while the customer is still pleased.
- Ask everyone. A steady trickle beats a burst.
- Reply to every review, good or bad.
- Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It is against Google's rules.
This habit is how Davis Electrical Solutions in Cork went from 0 to 30 reviews at a 4.9 average in 3 months, and from 0 to 35 leads in the same period.
7. Add real photos every week
Finished fuse boards, EV chargers on the wall, the van, you on site. Real photos from real jobs. Stock images do nothing for trust and nothing for ranking.
8. Post regularly
A short post once a week about a recent job: what it was, which town, one photo. It keeps the profile active and gives Google fresh local signals.
9. Back it up with a proper website
Your profile links to your website, and Google reads both. A site with a dedicated page for each service and each town supports the profile and picks up the searches the map does not cover. If you are weighing up what that costs, see how much an electrician website costs in Ireland.
10. Track the calls
Your profile shows how many people called, asked for directions and clicked through to your website. Check it monthly. If the numbers are not moving, something above is missing.
Common mistakes
- Stuffing keywords or town names into the business name. It breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
- Setting the profile up once and never touching it again.
- Only asking for reviews when things are quiet.
- Different phone numbers or addresses in different places online.
- Ignoring negative reviews instead of answering them calmly.

Google Maps questions from electricians
How many Google reviews does an electrician need?
There is no fixed number. You need enough to compare well with the three businesses currently showing on the map in your area, and you need them to keep coming. A steady flow of recent reviews matters more than one big batch.
Can I rank in towns I am not based in?
It is harder the further you are from your address, because distance is one of the things Google weighs. Setting service areas, getting reviews that mention those towns and having a page on your website for each one all help.
Should I show my home address on my profile?
If customers do not come to you, you can hide the address and list service areas instead. You still need a real address to verify the profile.
How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?
Once a week is a good target. A photo of a real job with a line about what was done and where is enough.
Is it okay to offer a discount for a review?
No. Google does not allow incentives for reviews, and profiles can be penalised for it. Ask every customer, make it easy, and leave it at that.
Do I need a website as well?
You can appear on the map without one, but a website linked to your profile helps Google understand your services and areas, and many customers will check it before they ring.
